I AM: KLOFAMA — A New Energy in Hardtechno

Every weekend, Mats van Biljouw enters a different world. The venues change, the crowds grow and the music gets louder. Under the name KLOFAMA, the 23-year-old DJ and producer has become one of the most promising figures in the new generation of hardtechno.

But before the international bookings, sold-out shows and packed dance floors, there was a bedroom in Horst, Limburg.

That is where Van Biljouw began making music and playing his first tracks to friends. Just three years later, he is travelling across Europe, performing for thousands at some of the biggest platforms in the hardtechno and electronic music scene. His rapid transformation is documented in I AM: KLOFAMA, a short film by production company CULT.

Directed by Sten Hoeijmakers of CULT. Productions, the documentary follows Mats during a defining year—one in which his career expands at a pace few artists experience. From airports and hotel rooms to backstage corridors and major venues, the film captures the relentless movement behind his rise.

Yet the documentary also follows him back home.

The place where it all began

Horst remains a significant part of Mats’ story. It is where he grew up, where his musical journey started and where he still returns between international performances. While his career takes him further away, home provides a connection to the person he was before KLOFAMA became a public identity.

That contrast shapes the film. On stage, KLOFAMA represents energy, ambition and intensity. The performances are powerful, physical and designed for thousands of people. Away from the spotlight, Mats moves through a much more familiar world: family, old friends, everyday conversations and the quiet streets of his hometown.

The difference between these two environments raises a deeper question. Can someone remain grounded when their life is increasingly defined by travel, recognition and public expectations?

For Mats, staying connected to home is not about rejecting his success. It is about remembering where he came from while trying to understand where he is going.

A private person in a public life

I AM: KLOFAMA looks beyond the image of the successful DJ. It explores the emotional reality of a young artist whose life has changed before he has had much time to adjust to it.

The public sees KLOFAMA on stage, surrounded by lights, sound and movement. The documentary focuses on what happens in between those performances. Mats is shown sitting at the kitchen table, spending time with friends who knew him before his breakthrough and talking openly in moments when the pressure of the artist persona begins to fade.

These scenes reveal a more vulnerable side of his journey. Doubt, loneliness, fatigue and relief exist alongside the excitement of performing internationally. Success has brought opportunities, but it has also introduced new responsibilities and expectations.

The film asks what happens when an artist’s identity develops faster than their personal sense of self. How do you remain authentic when an audience knows a version of you that has become larger than your everyday life? And how do you cope with the pressure of constantly having to perform—not only on stage, but sometimes as the person people expect KLOFAMA to be?

The speed of a new music industry

KLOFAMA’s breakthrough reflects the changing structure of the music industry. Social media and digital platforms have made it possible for artists to connect directly with audiences around the world. A producer working from a bedroom can now reach listeners far beyond their local scene, provided the music finds the right audience.

Van Biljouw’s career has developed along precisely that path. In only a few years, his music has taken him from Horst to major platforms including Blackworks, Verknipt, Rotterdam Rave and Teletech. He has also performed at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

Over the past two years, he has sold out multiple all-night-long shows in the Netherlands and abroad. These performances demonstrate the scale of his growth and mark his transition from emerging talent to an artist who can independently attract large international audiences.

His story is closely connected to the rise of a new hardtechno generation—one that moves quickly, communicates directly with fans and builds communities across national borders.

More than a story of success

While the music and the performances are central to I AM: KLOFAMA, the documentary ultimately focuses on something more universal. It is a story about a young person trying to understand a life that has suddenly become highly public.

I AM: KLOFAMA is currently in production and is expected to premiere in mid-2027.
