A long-lost collection of unreleased house, techno and electronica arrives from one of the UK’s most independent-minded electronic artists.
There is something uniquely exciting about hearing an artist open the archive — especially when that artist is Scarper. Known for balancing underground dancefloor instinct with rich melodic emotion, the UK producer has spent years carving out a sound that moves confidently between house, techno, acid and expansive electronica.
Now, with Off-Cuts (2014–2021), Scarper unveils eight previously unreleased tracks from a key period in his musical evolution. Selected from recordings made between 2014 and 2021, this carefully curated release captures ideas that were once left on the studio floor but have now been given the attention, polish and platform they deserve.
The result is not a collection of unfinished outtakes. It is a fully formed electronic statement — one that reveals the depth of Scarper’s creative process and the consistency of his musical vision.
The journey begins with “Skynet,” a soaring opener shaped by epic chord work and a powerful emotional pull. It is atmospheric without losing its forward momentum, offering a perfect introduction to Scarper’s ability to create electronic music that feels both cinematic and physical. “Steppe” follows with a welcome dose of mischief, driven by playful acid squelches and a restless club energy. Then there is “Halocline,” a beautifully arranged piece that uses elegant strings to bring warmth, tension and a sense of scale to the record’s evolving narrative.
Across its eight tracks, Off-Cuts (2014–2021) demonstrates why Scarper has built such a loyal following. His music does not rely on predictable formulas. Instead, it embraces contrast: softness and intensity, nostalgia and futurism, headphone detail and soundsystem impact.
Scarper explains that the release came about after revisiting old sessions and finding more than a few forgotten ideas worth finishing:
“I realised I had quite a few demos, jams & ideas on my laptop from that period, some of which were decent enough to polish up & get out into the world. It’s a snapshot of where I was musically at the time, so I thought I’d package them together as a retrospective rather than a proper release — giving people something to enjoy while I crack on with the next project.”
That modest framing makes the quality of the release even more impressive. What Scarper calls a retrospective plays like a rediscovered chapter — an essential addition to the story of an artist who has consistently followed his own path.
His debut album Warmer Squares was met with broad critical acclaim, backed by support from influential names including Orbital, Laurent Garnier and Carl Craig. Scarper’s records have also earned spins on Rinse FM, Sub FM and BBC 6 Music, alongside coverage from respected electronic platforms Mixmag, DJ Mag and XLR8R.
The timing is especially fitting as Scarper’s 2020 single “E-Funk” continues to enjoy renewed interest, boosted by a physical release through a new imprint. A track with undeniable dancefloor energy, “E-Funk” has introduced fresh listeners to Scarper’s sound — and Off-Cuts (2014–2021) offers a deeper dive into the era that helped define it.
As the driving force behind his own Plexus Records label, Scarper represents a true DIY ethos. His output remains free from genre restrictions, equally capable of delivering poignant melodic pieces and heavyweight underground grooves.
With Off-Cuts (2014–2021), Scarper proves that music held back by time can still arrive exactly when it is needed.
